Wood frames around garage doors are exposed to everything Ottawa weather throws at them — sun, snow, freeze-thaw, salt spray. Even pressure-treated wood eventually splits and peels. Aluminum capping wraps the wood in a permanent skin that handles all of it without painting, sanding, or scraping ever again.

What aluminum capping covers

  • The wood trim around your garage door opening (jambs and header)
  • Soffit and fascia connections above the door
  • The front face of the garage's structural posts where wood meets brick or stone
  • Custom-bent corners and miter cuts so the finish is seamless

Why homeowners choose aluminum over re-painting

It's permanent

Painted wood needs to be re-done every 3-5 years in Ottawa. Aluminum capping is installed once and you're done — no peeling, no sanding, no ladders every spring.

It stops the rot at the source

Once wood starts rotting, paint just hides the problem. Capping wraps the wood, blocks water entry at the seams, and keeps the structure underneath dry for the long haul.

It looks sharp

Capping is bent to fit your specific door frame, with clean mitred corners. Colour-matched to your door (white, taupe, brown, black, custom). Once it's up, most people don't realize it's aluminum — they just notice the trim looks crisp.

What a capping job looks like

  1. Measure and quoteWe come on-site, measure the linear feet around your door, look at how the existing wood is sitting, and write you a quote.
  2. Prep the woodWe make sure anything loose or rotted is addressed before we wrap. Rotten wood under fresh capping is a waste — we'd rather fix it once.
  3. Custom bend on the truckAluminum stock is bent on-site in our brake to match your exact dimensions. No off-the-rack pieces — every cap is shaped to your door.
  4. Install and sealCapping is nailed, then sealed at the joints with colour-matched caulking so water can't get behind it.
  5. Clean upWe haul away the off-cuts and old hardware. Your driveway is clean when we leave.

Real Liftime capping work — before & after

How long does it take?

Most residential single or double-bay garages are completed in a single visit. Larger triple-bay or oversized openings sometimes take a second visit if we need to order custom-colour stock.

Colours we work with

White, off-white, almond, taupe, sand, brown, dark brown, black, charcoal — and any custom colour through our supplier. We bring colour chips with us when we quote so you can match it to the door, the siding, or both.

Frequently asked questions

Does capping really last "forever"?
Aluminum stock from our supplier carries a 25-year manufacturer's warranty on the finish. In practice, properly installed capping in Ottawa often outlasts the door itself.
Can I cap over rotted wood?
No. Anything loose, soft, or actively rotting has to come out and be replaced before we wrap. We'd rather do this once and properly than wrap a problem that will get worse underneath.
Will capping change the look of my house?
Done right, no — most neighbours can't tell the difference. The proportions are the same; only the material changes. We can also reshape some details (like a bullnose corner) if you want a slightly different look.
Do you do capping during garage door install?
Yes, and we often recommend it. If the trim is already wood and exposed, doing capping at the same time as a new door install saves on a separate visit.
What if my trim is brick or stucco instead of wood?
Brick and stone don't need capping. If part of your trim is stucco, we'll inspect and recommend caulk + paint repair instead — capping is for wood specifically.
